Hornets sting the bear

Wow…after running through local teams like wind through a wheat field in the last few weeks,, our Reserve Bays got outscored by Nanaimo by a score of 17-12 Saturday at Mary Whasname Park.

Nanaimo strutted out some pretty big boys while the Bays fielded a lot of youngsters, bolstered by a few vets. With veteran human Mike Moss blowing the whistle, the game was afoot. During this first session, Nanaimo focussed on their larger and more experienced forwards in the first half, which was plagued by errors on both teams, as well as a stream of whistles. A line-out and drive by the host team gave them a 5-0 lead at the half.

During the first part of the second half, Bays’ handling errors stymied potential scoring opportunities which ultimately allowed the yellow wasps to extend their led to 17-0 midway through this frame. A clever intercept by Nate Tough and a pass to young Kai Khan brings the score to 17-7 after Nate clubs the convert. By now the tide shifts toward the younger and fitter visitors and a quick tap by young Brady White off a penalty gives JBAA their second and well-deserved tally. With the score at 17-12 the visitors continue to press but are unable to change the scoreboard till the ref puffs a tired breath into the final whistle to end the game.

It would be remiss to not mention the veterans Teaghan White and Ben Johnson, as well as Young Take O’Neill, for their relentless aggression on defence. And thanks to Roger and Mike and Tony for their support…Bang!!
